Car Hire for Your Driving Test in NSW: Everything Learners Need to Know

Tips

Your driving test is a big milestone, so it's completely normal to feel a little nervous. If you're worried about using your own car or don't have access to one that's suitable for the test, hiring a vehicle can make things much easier. A test-ready car with dual controls gives you one less thing to think about, so you can focus on driving your best.

Here at David VIP Driving School, you can book a roadworthy car for your driving test so you can arrive ready and confident. The service is available within our service areas and for selected local test centres. And to help you avoid last-minute surprises, we’ve also compiled in this blog the key practical details you should know before test day.

What should a driving-test car-hire package include?

When you're comparing driving test car hire packages, look beyond the car and see what comes with it. Choose a package that includes a lesson before your test so you also get the chance to settle your nerves and refresh your driving skills. This will also let you get comfortable in the vehicle you'll be using.

At David VIP Driving School, our current driving-test package is $200 and includes a one-hour mock/pre-test lesson and use of the instructor’s car for the driving test.

Should I warm up before my driving test?

A short lesson before your test can help ease your nerves. Instead of arriving feeling anxious, you'll have time to get comfortable behind the wheel and receive a few last-minute tips from your instructor.

Our warm-up lesson also includes pick-up and drop-off, so the whole experience becomes even more convenient. After your test, we'll also check in with you to see how everything went.

When should I book car hire for a driving test near me?

The starting time must allow for the full warm-up lesson, travel, parking, and check-in before the test. We will arrange the correct starting time after receiving a screenshot of your learner’s test booking. We’ll build in enough time to practise and settle your nerves, so you can head into your test feeling ready.

What should I bring on my test day?

Besides bringing the hired car, make sure you also have everything you'll need on the day, including:

  • Bring proof of identity, including your learner, interstate, or overseas licence, as applicable. Overseas licence holders may also need additional identity documents and an approved English translation.
  • Your completed licence application form.
  • Payment or your concession card, if applicable.
  • Your completed Learner Driver Log Book or app if you're under 25 years old.
  • Your glasses or contact lenses if you need them for driving.

Note that:

  • You must arrive at least 15 minutes before the test.
  • A fully licensed driver must accompany you.
  • Learners under 25 using the digital logbook must submit it at least 48 hours before the test.
