Top Tips for Passing Your Driving Test at Merrylands Service Centre
Ready to book your test? Ask about our Test Day Packages, including use of our instructor’s car.
Taking your NSW driving test can feel stressful, especially when you know that one mistake could affect your result. However, good preparation, safe driving habits and confidence behind the wheel can make a big difference on test day.
If you have booked your driving test at Merrylands Service Centre, preparing around the local area before your test can help you become more comfortable with the types of traffic conditions, intersections, roundabouts and residential streets you may encounter.
At David VIP Driving School, we help learner drivers prepare for their NSW driving tests with professional automatic driving lessons, mock test preparation and personalised feedback.
Whether you are a first-time learner, a nervous driver, an overseas licence holder or someone who has previously been unsuccessful in a driving test, these tips can help you prepare.
1. Don't Just Memorise a Driving Test Route
One of the biggest mistakes learners can make is trying to memorise a particular Merrylands driving test route.
Road conditions can change, and you should be prepared to demonstrate safe driving regardless of which streets you are asked to drive on.
Instead of memorising turns, practise the skills you need in different situations.
During your driving lessons around Merrylands, focus on:
- Busy and quiet intersections
- Roundabouts
- Residential streets
- Multi-lane roads
- Lane changing
- Traffic lights
- School zones
- Pedestrian crossings
- Parking
- Kerb-side stops
- Three-point turns
- Safe gap selection
If you can confidently manage these situations, you will be much better prepared even if the testing officer takes you somewhere you haven't practised before.
2. Practise Driving Around Merrylands Before Your Test
Local experience is extremely valuable.
Merrylands and the surrounding suburbs contain a mixture of busy shopping areas, residential streets, traffic lights, intersections and roads with varying traffic conditions.
Before your test, spend time practising around Merrylands, Guildford, Granville, South Granville, Holroyd, Greystanes and nearby areas.
The aim isn't simply to recognise the streets. You want to become comfortable making safe decisions when dealing with changing traffic conditions.
At David VIP Driving School, we can structure your pre-test lessons around the areas where you need the most improvement.
3. Make Your Observation Checks Clear
Good observation is one of the most important habits to develop before your driving test.
Don't rely only on your mirrors.
You should regularly scan the road ahead and be aware of vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and potential hazards around you.
Remember to perform appropriate checks when:
- Moving away from the kerb
- Changing lanes
- Turning
- Approaching intersections
- Entering or leaving roundabouts
- Merging
- Parking
- Completing manoeuvres
- Pulling over
- Re-entering traffic
When a head check is required, make it clear enough for the testing officer to see that you have actually checked.
However, don't exaggerate your movements. Your observation should remain natural and safe.
4. Watch Your Speed Carefully
Speed management is another area where learners can easily make mistakes.
Always look for speed limit signs and adjust your speed according to the road and traffic conditions.
Don't drive above the speed limit because you feel pressured by another vehicle behind you.
At the same time, unnecessarily driving far below the speed limit when conditions are safe can show a lack of confidence and may interfere with other traffic.
Get into the habit of checking your speed regularly without staring at the speedometer for too long.
Pay particular attention when entering:
- School zones
- Shopping areas
- Residential streets
- Roadworks
- Different speed zones
Good speed management should become automatic by the time you take your driving test.
5. Don't Forget Your Head Checks
This deserves special attention because learners often remember to use their mirrors but forget their blind spots.
Before changing your road position, ask yourself:
Could there be a vehicle, cyclist or other road user beside me that I cannot see in my mirrors?
If there could be, perform the appropriate head check before moving.
Practise this repeatedly during your lessons until it becomes a habit rather than something you have to remember specifically for the test.
6. Take Your Time at Intersections
Do not rush through an intersection simply because another driver is waiting behind you.
Your responsibility is to make a safe decision.
Approach intersections at an appropriate speed, observe the traffic conditions and choose a safe gap.
Be particularly careful when:
- Turning right across oncoming traffic
- Turning from a side street
- Entering a busy road
- Approaching STOP and GIVE WAY signs
- Dealing with pedestrians
- Visibility is restricted
If you aren't sure a gap is safe, don't take unnecessary risks just because you are worried the testing officer thinks you are taking too long.
Safe decision-making is more important than rushing.
7. Know How to Handle Roundabouts
Roundabouts can make many learner drivers nervous, particularly when traffic is busy.
Before your Merrylands driving test, make sure you are comfortable with:
- Choosing the correct lane
- Giving way correctly
- Selecting a safe gap
- Signalling correctly
- Maintaining good lane position
- Checking for pedestrians
- Exiting the roundabout safely
Practise both small residential roundabouts and busier roundabouts so you aren't surprised by different traffic situations on test day.
8. Practise Your Parking and Manoeuvres
Your driving test preparation shouldn't only focus on normal road driving.
Make sure you are comfortable performing common manoeuvres safely and with good observation.
Practise:
Reverse Parking
Take your time, maintain good vehicle control and continue observing your surroundings throughout the manoeuvre.
Three-Point Turn
Check carefully before every movement and maintain slow, controlled steering.
Kerb-Side Stop
Choose a safe position and make sure you check your mirrors and blind spot before pulling towards the kerb.
The important thing is not to perform these manoeuvres as quickly as possible.
Control, observation and safety are more important than speed.
9. Signal Correctly – But Don't Signal Too Early
Your indicators communicate your intentions to other road users.
Use them correctly when:
- Turning
- Changing lanes
- Leaving the kerb
- Pulling over
- Entering or leaving certain parking situations
- Navigating roundabouts when required
Be careful about signalling too early, particularly when there are side streets or driveways before your intended turn.
An early signal can confuse other drivers.
10. Maintain Good Road Position
Keep your vehicle appropriately positioned within your lane.
Avoid driving unnecessarily close to parked vehicles, but don't move so far away from them that you create problems for oncoming traffic.
When turning, pay attention to your vehicle's position before, during and after the turn.
Your instructor can help you identify positioning problems that you may not notice yourself.
11. Look Further Ahead
Many new drivers focus only on the vehicle directly in front of them.
Try to look further down the road.
For example, you might notice:
- A pedestrian approaching a crossing
- Brake lights several vehicles ahead
- Traffic building near an intersection
- A bus preparing to move
- A cyclist ahead
- A vehicle pulling out of a driveway
- Traffic lights changing
- A parked vehicle with someone inside
Spotting potential hazards early gives you more time to make a safe decision.
12. Don't Let Other Drivers Pressure You
During your test, you may encounter drivers who are impatient, follow too closely or try to pressure you into moving faster.
Ignore the pressure.
Continue driving safely and legally.
The testing officer is assessing your driving, not the behaviour of the impatient driver behind you.
Stay calm, maintain an appropriate speed and concentrate on what is happening around you.
13. If You Make a Small Mistake, Keep Driving
One small mistake does not necessarily mean your entire test is over.
Many learners become distracted after making an error because they start thinking:
“I've failed.”
Then they make another mistake because they are no longer concentrating on the road.
If something doesn't go exactly as planned, keep driving safely.
Focus on what is happening now, not what happened 30 seconds ago.
Maintaining concentration is one of the most important things you can do on test day.
14. Listen Carefully to the Testing Officer
The testing officer will give you directions during the test.
Listen carefully and don't panic.
If you genuinely did not hear or understand an instruction, you can ask for it to be repeated rather than guessing.
Remember that your priority is always driving safely.
15. Prepare the Car Before Your Test
Before leaving for Merrylands Service Centre, make sure the vehicle you are using is ready for the test.
Check basic items such as:
- Indicators
- Brake lights
- Headlights where required
- Tyres
- Mirrors
- Windscreen
- Seat belts
- Doors
- Registration and general roadworthiness
If you are completing your test using a driving school vehicle, your instructor can help you prepare before arriving at the testing centre.
16. Arrive Early and Avoid Unnecessary Stress
Give yourself enough time to arrive, park and prepare before your appointment.
Merrylands Service Centre currently provides driver testing by appointment and has designated Service NSW Driver Testing Parking at Stockland Merrylands. Drivers are directed to enter the Stockland Merrylands car park from Treves Street, use the P4 parking entry and follow the signs to the allocated driver-testing spaces.
Knowing where you need to go before test day can remove unnecessary stress.
17. Consider a Mock Driving Test Before Your Real Test
One of the best ways to find out whether you are genuinely ready is to complete a mock driving test.
During a normal lesson, your instructor may help and explain things as you drive.
A mock test can be different.
It gives you an opportunity to drive more independently and helps identify mistakes that might affect your performance during the real test.
At David VIP Driving School, we can help you prepare before your Merrylands driving test by focusing on areas such as:
- Observation
- Speed management
- Lane positioning
- Gap selection
- Hazard awareness
- Roundabouts
- Intersections
- Parking and manoeuvres
- Decision-making
- Confidence under test conditions
Afterwards, we can explain which areas are strong and what still needs improvement.
18. Nervous About Your Merrylands Driving Test? You're Not Alone
Being nervous before a driving test is normal.
The best way to reduce that nervousness is to be properly prepared.
Instead of hoping you receive an “easy route,” aim to reach a point where you feel comfortable driving independently in different road and traffic conditions.
Our instructors work with nervous learners patiently and can concentrate on the situations that make you least confident.
If roundabouts make you nervous, we'll practise roundabouts.
If lane changing is difficult, we'll work on lane changing.
If parking is your concern, we'll spend more time on parking.
Your lesson should be based on what you need, not simply following the same routine for every learner.
